A Glimpse into Life at Havergal During COVID-19

A Message From our School Captain

Hello and welcome to Gator Buzz: History and Horizons! Over the course of the last year, the world has experienced an immense amount of uncertainty due to COVID-19; everything from lockdowns, to online school and social distancing restrictions. Although there have been many difficulties, the Havergal community has embraced the unpredictability and has truly made this year one to remember.

In true Havergal fashion, we’ve taken the words of our first Principal Ellen Knox to heart: “What will you do?” Over the last few months, our community has risen to the challenge—creating, innovating, and finding joy in difficulty. We are living during a historic time, not just in Havergal’s history, but in that of our world. As student leaders, we are incredibly proud of what our peers have accomplished and how our school community has come together to connect and explore the unknown.

With this in mind, we wanted to share some of this year’s activities, creations and innovations of Havergal students. This website was created as a sort-of a time capsule to document the 2020-21 school year, showcase our resilience, and highlight key aspects of the Havergal experience during a global pandemic.

I hope you enjoy 🙂

A Message from the Executive Director of Strategic Enrolment Management and the Associate Head of School

We weren’t at all surprised when a group of students connected with us to create a time capsule of sorts to pay tribute to the Havergal community and its ability to persevere and connect creatively throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This is what we have witnessed during the past 18 months, the “can-do” attitude that has been there since Havergal’s inception.

When our first Principal Ellen Knox asked her students “What will you do?”, there is no doubt she was hoping they would look beyond themselves and connect and support their community in ways that made a difference. Sophia, Emma, Nadia, Sydney and all of the students who have helped to create Gator Buzz: History and Horizons would have made Ms. Knox proud. In fact, the whole Havergal community has come together to make this year in our 127-year history a very special one. From new ideas to reimagined celebrations of beloved traditions, the 2020-21 school year has created more memories than we thought possible.

Our motto, vitai lampada tradens, which translates to passing on the torch of life, is clearly fitting. Keep shining your light, Gators, and keep making a difference.
